Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) is on a mission to discover, inspire, and train the great problem solvers of the next generation. Since 2003, we have trained hundreds of thousands of the country’s top students, including nearly all the members of the US International Math Olympiad team, through our online school, in-person academies, textbooks, and online learning systems. While our primary focus has been math for most of our history, through the years we have expanded our unique problem solving curriculum into subjects, such as language arts, science, and computer science.

We seek creative and collaborative product developers to help us continue to improve our existing products and develop new ones.

In this role, you will:

Develop a deep understanding of our products and users (students, parents, teachers, administrators, etc). Investigate questions about our users using surveys, interviews, data analysis, and other methodologies. Develop a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and relevant technological advances. Investigate third-party technologies and tools that we are considering integrating into our products. Contribute to the development of product roadmaps and strategy. Create design requirements, technical specs, and timelines for projects, collaborating closely with software engineers, designers, curriculum developers, project managers, and other stakeholders. Provide direction to the project team, make decisions that balance project end goals with available resources, and ensure that project outputs meet quality standards and requirements.

Examples of projects you may work on as a Product Developer:

New interactive tools for students to practice math in Beast Academy Online, as well as new tools and reports for parents, teachers, and administrators to track student progress. A platform for teachers in schools around the world to deliver a customized Beast Academy curriculum to millions of elementary school studentsThe next iteration of a flexible, engaging homework system for our AoPS Online School text-based and self-paced classes, our Virtual Campus video-based classes, and our in-person AoPS Academy learning centers.The next generation of online tools for delivering video-based live instruction in our Virtual Campus classes.

You might be a good fit for this position if...

You’re passionate about our educational mission, and want to help us reach more students. You love to build and create, and are excited to be involved in setting the vision and roadmap for the product you’re working on. While you may not have strong art skills yourself, you care about design and can see things from the perspective of the user. You get frustrated when products and websites are not designed well, and probably have a few suggestions for us after looking through our website. You listen to other’s ideas and perspectives, but are comfortable being the one making the final call. You have strong problem solving and analytical skills, and aren’t scared off when conversations with software engineers start to get technical. You’re a strong written and verbal communicator, and can communicate goals clearly and keep people moving in the same direction. You’re driven to stay up-to-date with new technologies and products. You have experience building, running, or leading a project, program, or team.

Perks and Benefits:

This is a hybrid full-time position based at our headquarters in San Diego, CA. Depending on experience level, we generally either hire at the Product Developer I or Product Developer II level. The full salary range for Product Developer I is 70 - 80k and the full salary range for Product Developer II is 80 - 95k, both with a 4% year-end bonus. Based on experience, interview performance, and initial projects/responsibilities, we’re also occasionally able to hire directly into a Senior Product Developer position.
